WILDWOOD STABLES
Open year round

Treat yourself to the wonderful horse trails in beautiful Big South Fork followed by clean, comfortable lodging with private bathrooms in the cabins or Lodge in the same grounds.. On the rugged Cumberland Plateau, Big South Fork National River and Recreational Area is the largest equestrian park in South East stablesAmerica. Right next to Big South Fork, we built our stables for riders wanting to enjoy the miles and miles of trails in this beautiful setting.

We opened the stables on April 4th 2002. They are purpose built, all wood stalls with a covered concrete walkway. They are our four-legged friends' Bed and Breakfast, minus the eggs and bacon! There are twenty six, 10' x 12', sturdy stalls, equipped with 2 concrete wash racks. They are well lit at night and well ventilated. As you will see, we thought about your comfort with plenty of mulch forks, picking forks, yard carts and water pipes so that the chores are as light as possible and that you're not waiting around for someone else to finish up.

The roads have been designed to help you maneuver those huge trailers - a one way system with plenty of parking space. For stalls 12-19, unload in front of the stalls; for stalls 20-26, unload at the back of the stables and take the plank path up to the concrete walkway. Drive on the circular road behind the stables where you can park, exit in front of the stables, turn right on North Fork Drive and get back onto H297. When unloading, please park close to the stables, off the road. Please think of other guests when parking your trailer.

Access to Big South Fork Park is just 300 yards from the stables down Montgomery Road to Wild Cat Den Trail. You will also find two of the most popular trailheads 2 miles away; on Divide Road, taking you down to Charitt Creek or on the 297, Cumberland Trail Head. There is excellent parking for your trailers.

map of the stablesAs we know that one man's meat is another man's poison, we will not provide any feed to upset your horse's digestion. Addresses and hours of local suppliers can be found below. Similarly to eliminate contamination risks, we will not furnish water buckets or hay racks.

For people staying with us, stall rates are $10 per night; otherwise, the rate is $14. Stalls are clean for your arrival. You are responsible for maintaining them during your stay. Bedding is available at the back of the stables at the mulch pile. Manure can be taken by wheelbarrow and dumped in the trailer at the end of the walkway after stall 26. We deep clean the stalls after departure. We have provided easy to use yard carts - to make hard work lighter - they are not suitable for the gravel roads.

Water can be drawn from the three faucets at the front of the stalls, equipped with pipes to eliminate carrying buckets. Please rewind the pipes and close water off at the hydrant. Wash racks are available at the back of the stalls through the central walkway between stall 12 and 13, where you'll find the central switch for the walkway lights as well as the sweeping brush.

We are quite happy for you to lead your horses on the mown grass for them to graze, except when the ground is wet (quite exceptional at the moment!).

The stables are next to the new cabins and just round the corner by road from the Bed and Breakfast, Wildwood Lodge. Feed your horses and then come on to have the big cooked, country breakfast whilst they digest.

We hope that the following, that we ask all our guests to respect, will make your stay enjoyable!

Arrival : Before stabling horses, please register at Wildwood Lodge. When you arrive at the Lodge on from Jamestown or Oneida side, park just after the sign and before the big planter - that way, you can drive off up to Akers Chapel and make a one mile loop back onto H 154 without any reversing. You must show us original negative Coggins papers with a test in the last year. This is a USDA requirement and we apply the rules stringently. Registration is from 4pm (although if the stalls are ready, we are happy to be flexible). If you plan to arrive after 8pm, we need a mailed or EMailed copy of the negative Coggins papers; on receipt, we will send you your stall numbers. To protect our other guests' horses, we still must see the original documents the morning after your arrival.

Departure is 10.30 am. Please settle your bill at Wildwood Lodge.
Wildwood Lodge is on Central Time. Beware - Big South Fork NRA is on Eastern Time.

There is absolutely no smoking at the stables.

Please do not ride your horses on the grass - hoof prints play havoc with mowing and horse droppings aren't much fun either...

We want you to enjoy the stables and we work hard to keep them clean. Please help us by picking up manure that your horse may drop on the roads.

Don't forget your water buckets, feed holders and hay nets !
